Daily Minyan – May 3, 2009

Rainy day here today.

With Orangebird still sick!

Brad Ausmus, C – Los Angeles Dodgers

Brad, didn’t play in the Dodgers’ victory over the Padres.

Ryan Braun, OF, 3B – Milwaukee Brewers

Ryan missed yesterday’s Brewers game due to a sore back, probably from carrying so much of the load for his team!!

Craig Breslow, P – Minnesota Twins

Craig took the loss in yesterday’s game against the Royals.  He entered the top of the 11th inning with the score tied 7-7 and proceeded to walked the bases loaded,

getting only one out and throwing 14 of his 21 pitches for balls.  His record is now 0-1 and his ERA ballooned to 8.10!

Stating the painfully obvious, after the game Craig said, “I’m not going to make excuses. I just didn’t have it,”

Scott Feldman, P – Texas Rangers

Scott, who pitched very well on Friday, watched the Ranger victory over the ChiSox from the bench.

John Grabow, P, Pittsburgh Pirates

John pitched one inning and gave up an unearned run on 2 hits He was victimized by a throwing error by 2B Felix Sanchez, which allowed Brandon Phillips to reach base and eventually score. He also struck out Ramon Hernandez (I think my son could do that!) before he got out of the inning.  His ERA shrank to 2.19.

Gabe Kapler, OF – Tampa Bay Rays

Gabe went 1-for-3, with a single and two strikeouts in yesterday’s loss to the BoSox. He raised his average to .229.

Ian Kinsler, 2B – Texas Rangers

Ian went 2-for-4, including his 8th double of the year, drove in one and scored one in the Rangers win over the White Sox.  He’s now batting .330.

Jason Marquis, P – Colorado Rockies

Jason (4-1) struck out five and walked one in his fifth career complete game and first since a 1-0 victory for the Cubs on May 9, 2007.  He gave up a leadoff single before retiring 14 of the next 15 hitters he faced. After giving up consecutive singles in the fifth, he retired 13 of the final 15 batters he faced.

Marquis is 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA in eight career games against San Francisco, allowing more than two runs just once in seven starts.

“I like the mound here,” Marquis said. “I feel right on top of the hitters and I like the cold. I got early outs and kept the ball down. I am the type of guy who wants to do everything. I’m tough-minded and I believe in myself. I feel like I don’t have to look over my shoulder here if something goes wrong. I can go out every fifth day and battle every time I step on the mound.”

“He’s the ultimate competitor,” Ryan Spilborghs said. “We want him to have the ball. He’s like the Little League kid who wants to catch everything, and make every play. You can even see it when he’s hitting.”

Scott Schoeneweis, P – Arizona Diamondbacks

Scott didn’t pitch in the Diamondbacks win over the Brewers.

Kevin Youkilis, 1B, 3B – Boston Red Sox

Youk went 1-for-3, knocked in 3 runs and scored a run.  He hit a 2-run double and drew a bases-loaded walk in yesterday’s victory over the Rays.  Youk is currently leading the majors with a .402 average.
