today’s Minyan will highlight a famous Baltimore baseball beginning and a not so famous end.

 

On May 30, 1935, Babe Ruth plays only the first inning of the opener of a doubleheader between the Boston Braves and Philadelphia Phillies at Baker Bowl. It is his final major league appearance.

 

 

On May 30, 1982, Cal Ripken plays the first of his record 2,632 straight games. 

“The Streak” ends on September 20, 1998.  A game that I had tickets for, but didn’t attend because of the Jewish holidays.

 

 

Brad Ausmus, C – Los Angeles Dodgers

Brad didn’t play in yesterday’s loss to the Cubbies.  

 

Ryan Braun, OF, 3B – Milwaukee Brewers

Ryan went 1-for-3, hit his 10th double, walked and scored a run in the Brewers win over the Reds.  He raised his average to .315.  

 

Craig Breslow, P – Oakland A’s

Craig recorded a scoreless inning of work in the A’s loss to the Rangers. He lowered his ERA to 5.12.

That earned him a Chai 5.

 

  

Scott Feldman, P – Texas Rangers

Scott (4-0) pitched 6 innings and gave up two runs on five hits and three walks to help the Rangers win for the sixth time in eight games and completed a doubleheader sweep of the A’s on Friday night.  He also struck out two and lowered his ERA to 3.91.

He allowed four baserunners in the first inning, but gave up only one run before settling down.

 

“I thought he did an excellent job to hang in there the way he did,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said.

Scott has pitched at least five innings in each of his seven starts since being inserted into the rotation on April 25 when Kris Benson went on the disabled list. 

 “I started behind in the count on too many guys, and that will drive your pitch count up,” Scott said of his early struggles. “But anytime your team wins, you’ve got to be grateful.”

Scott has earned another Chai 5!!   

                 

John Grabow, P, Pittsburgh Pirates

John didn’t pitch in the Pirates loss to the Astros.  

                         

Gabe Kapler, OF – Tampa Bay Rays

Gabe pinch hit for Gabe Gross in the 7th inning and went 0-for-1, with a walk.  He also was thrown out trying to steal.  His average remained below the Mendoza Line and is currently .186. 

 

 

 

Ian Kinsler, 2B – Texas Rangers

Ian went 0-for-5 in the Rangers double header sweep of the A’s, but performed a lead-off hitter’s role by walking 3 times and scoring twice.  He lowered his average to .275 

 

Jason Marquis, P – Colorado Rockies

Jason (7-3) pitched 8 shut-out innings against the Padres to pick up his third straight win. He gave up six hits, walked four and struck out a season-high six batters.

He wanted to finish off the game, but Huston Street came on instead and pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save.

“I felt good enough to go out there,” Marquis said. “It’s the manager’s decision. I’m fine with that.”

Jason has pitched into the eighth inning in each of his past three starts and has worked at least seven innings in seven of his 10 starts this season. He has decisions in all of them, going 7-3 with a 3.93 ERA and is tied with Johan Santana of the Mets and Bronson Arroyo of the Reds for the most wins in the National League.  

 

Scott Schoeneweis, P – Arizona Diamondbacks

Scott is currently dealing with the unexpected loss of  his wife.  My prayers are with him.  For the first time since his tragedy, Scott visited with his teammates at Chase Field on Wednesday.

              

Kevin Youkilis, 1B, 3B – Boston Red Sox

Youk went 1-for-3, walked once and struck out once in the Sox loss to the Blue Jays.  He raised his average slightly to .374
